"A Dharma classic." Buddhadharma Magazine, Summer 2005
In his 2000 ground-breaking work, Black Buddha, Lama Choyin Rangdrol pioneered the racial divide in “American Buddhism.” He championed diversity at a time white sanghas didn’t question the absence of people of color. Since then, Black Buddha has been reviewed as a dharma classic by Buddhadharma Magazine. Lama Choyin Rangdrol has continued to teach internationally, drawing on his personal observations to address racism in Buddhist organizations. This concise work discuses the most asked questions about black people and Buddhism, including their connection to India.

After years of study and practice Lama realized people of color were marginalized within American Buddhism. He found this to be true for some more than others. He believes until Buddhism in America is equally accessible for all, diversity is a work in progress currently unable to deliver what it purports to be. These poems give voice to the experiences of black men and their families looking for a place to call home in the American Buddhist experience. Lama Rangdrol

Staying Alive: Side by Side explores the historical significance of freed African slaves and Asian immigrant labor on the Western Frontier. While whites debated which ethnic group was lower or less amenable to white society, Asians and African Americans carved out communities by developing uniquely different strategies for survival. Often pitted against one another over resources and legal rights, division between the communities had lasting impact on the way they view one another spiritually. Staying Alive navigates this territory while offering insight into a future of mutual respect.

What's a compassionate practitioner to do when faced with a lack of diversity in their own sangha? While tacitly benefiting from prejudice, white practitioners sometimes suffer from guilt of the injustice it is based on. This short work explores the dilemma faced by practitioners who want to change. It offers questions every sangha in America should reflect upon when considering diversity and outreach of its programs.

The most difficult obstacle of my Buddhist practice was my feeling of entitlement to anger. As a black man in America there was much to be angry about. I had to grapple with it. Anger is not the path to liberation and evolution as a human being.
Many Black men searching for the meaning of Buddhist peace have this problem. I wanted to offer a series of meditations to help them address the slave master of anger. We cannot achieve liberation without doing this very personal work. Lama Rangdrol

Traitors, Converts, and Heathens is a collection of three books (Black Buddha, White Buddha, and Staying Alive) in one volume. It represents a major racial and cultural nexus affecting the migration of Buddhism to America in the early 21st century. Enslavement of African-Americans, predation of Asian-American frontier communities, and the resultant white burden of detachment are courageously given voice when it was considered "unBuddhist" to discuss.
Like much of Lama Rangdrol's teachings and work, Traitors, Converts, & Heathens, is a refreshingly unapologetic look at the challenges of dharma in America. The guiding message is one of patience, healing, and liberation from ideas that impede the practice of equanimity in American Buddhist communities.
