Between 1965 and 1973 the United States dropped 2,756,941 tons of bombs on the small Buddhist country of Cambodia. This is more than all the bombs dropped during World War II, including the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

In 2007, I made a pilgrimage to Cambodia to visit the world’s largest religious site at Angkor. I went as a Buddhist lama, but also as an American child of the Vietnam War looking for a deeper understanding of the events that shaped my youth.

Festival Canceled Due to Heavy Rain was inspired by my visit to the monuments at Angkor, and by my experiences with the Cambodian people. Their desire for peace today is testimony to the resiliency of their Buddhist faith in forgiveness and reconciliation.

I learned much from them, and make this small offering in return.
